HUNTER CLASSICS AMATEUR WOMEN'S TOUR Hunter Classics - 3rd Stop - Billiards, Burgers and Beer.   Denver, Colorado June 23rd and 24th, 2000
by Cynthia Ferrer

This is the second time that Terry McFadden has hosted a Hunter Classics stop. Billiards, Burgers and Beer features high quality equipment and the perfect place for 39 ladies to compete for the $750 first prize and the WPBA qualifier.  A special Thank You goes to Deb and Bob Winter and their Cue Times Billiard News that gave us great publicity in the Denver area, Maureen Finn for getting the tour hotel info, and Terry McFadden and Stacy Jackman who ran an excellent tournament with great service from all the staff at Billiards, Burgers and Beer.  Did we hear that Terry wants to make this a yearly stop?  Thank you Terry!

Of the 39 player field, 21 of the players were in contention for the qualifier spot.  The Hunter Classic tour gained 22 new members!  Lots of confident women were competing.  The competition was fierce - many veteran players made this a tough field.  The tournament began at 10:30 on Saturday and play continued non-stop until 8pm.  By the end of the day only 8 players remained.

On Sunday the eight remaining players: On the winners side were Kim White (winner of the April 2000, Legends tour stop).  First time Hunter Classics tour players - Brenda Plantz and Cheryl Backward and local player Katrina Games were also on the winners side.   On the one loss side was Gail Lave (winner of the February 2000 Corner Pocket stop),  Kristi Carter (former WPBA pro-player), Julie Stephenson (BCA Masters Player) and Debi Schjodt (Hunter Tour newcomer).

Kim White dominated her matches with wins over Jessica Penta (7-2), Lorri Oliver (7-4), Debi Schjodt (7-3), Prudy Brenkendorf (7-2),  Katrina Games (7-1), Brenda Plantz (7-1).  After a first round bye, newcomer Brenda Plantz stormed through a field of tough opponents with several close matches, with wins over Lisa Marr (7-6), Julie Stephenson (7-6), Gail Lave (7-4) and Cheryl Backward (7-5).

The winners side matches ended up with Kim White and Brenda Plantz shooting it out for the hot seat.  Kim White was on and scored a win over Brenda Plantz (7-1).  After being sent to the one-loss side, Debi Schjodt showed her determination by besting Gail Lave and Cheryl Backward and then Julie Stephenson.  Brenda Plantz hung tough with Debi in order to earn a rematch with Kim White.  Down at one point 0-4, she hung on and came back to win 9-8.  Debi Schjodt played well through out the tournament and finished with a well deserved 3rd place.

The final race to 11 match began with both players playing strong and playing smart.  The score see-sawed back and forth. With Kim leading 1-1, 2-2, 3-2, 4-3.  She gradually pulled away to 6-3.  Brenda determined to hang in there brought the score to 6-4.  With Kim's determination to win her 2nd Hunter she used her experience and skill to pull away with a 8-4 score.  Unfortunately at this critical point in the match, Brenda had an unexpected critical family emergency and ended up forfeiting to Kim with the score 8-4.  So, Kim White for the second time this year won the Hunter Classics tour stop and the WPBA qualifier.  Congratulations to all these ladies for excellent play.

On the other side of the house, several ladies were playing in the $100 added 2nd Chance tournament.  Veteran player Leslie Rogers bested Cynthia Ferrer by winning the winners bracket after being down 0-3. Lisa Marr sent to the one-loss side in the 2nd round by Leslie, got in stroke and won the one-loss side for a rematch with Leslie.  The finals was a race to 7 with Lisa coming back from a 5-2 score to bring the match hill-hill.   Leslie prevailed again and won the $100 first prize.
