HUNTER CLASSICS AMATEUR WOMEN'S TOUR
Third
Hunter Classics Stop visits Paradise.
To most people,
Colorado is Paradise. On June 15th-16th, 30 women were playing pool
at Paradise Billiards, where owner Terry
McFadden welcomed
us for the fourth year in a row to his wonderful pool room. This
tournament was another WPBA Qualifier and the highest lady to pay the Qualifying
fee of $50 would get to play at the WPBA Stop at the MidWest Classic in
Peoria, IL in August. With the brackets being updated online at AZBilliards.com
throughout the weekend, the 30 ladies were being watched by many and 11
of them were vying for the Qualifier.
Many of the
ladies were from Colorado and Texas, but some were also from Iowa, Minnesota,
and Arkansas. In the end, it was Rose McCrory from Colorado winning
the tournament, with Leslie Anne Rogers from Texas placing second and winning
the Qualifier.
For hosting
this event, Terry was given a beautiful Hunter Classics Custom Cue, valued
at $1,900. It is yet another beautiful example of Wes Hunter's work
- a paduak forearm w/6 ebony points, 3 long, 3 short, an ebony butt with
paduak, light teal, purple veneers, and stitch rings with 3 paduak border
window inlays in the butt.
Play commenced
at 10am on Saturday and only 8 players were left in the main event on Sunday.
It was a fierce battle for the top prize - with many of the local Colorado
girls hanging tough and pulling through on some difficult matches.
Players on the
winners side included Colorado's Rose McCrory (who just placed 9th at the
BCA Nationals in May), besting Colorado's Andrea Wardell (first time on
the winner's side on Sunday). Karla Chorny, from Iowa, bested Colorado's
Brenda
Plantz.
On the one-loss side, Leslie Anne Rogers defeated teammate Orietta Strickland
hill-hill (both from Texas), while Deb
Winter (Cuetimes
magazine owner) defeated Jacqueline Broadhurst (both from Colorado).
By this time
in the tournament, the six ladies left already placed higher than they
did last year in this event and everyone was very
happy for them,
routing for their favorite player. Terry McFadden, although supporting
all of the ladies, was happy to see locals doing well at his stop.
Rose McCrory
made her way through the tournament undefeated with wins over Kathy Krabbenschmidt
(7-1), Melinda Bailey (7-4),
Carol Radebaugh
(7-4), Andrea Wardell (7-5), and Karla Chorny (7-1), before playing Leslie
Anne Rogers in the finals.
Leslie's road
to the finals started with a win over Tawnia Tresca (7-1), before
losing to Andrea Wardell (4-7). She then started her
winning streak
to the finals with wins over Kendra Tomsik (7-6), Ranee Breckel (7-2),
Mindy Williams (7-3), Orietta Strickland (7-6),
Andrea Wardell
(7-5), Brenda Plantz (7-3), and Karla Chorny (7-2).
The finals was
one race to 7, and it was a hill-hill thriller for the audience with Rose
coming out on top and winning $750. Brenda
Plantz placed
fourth and won $250, Karla Chorny placed third and won $400, and Leslie
Anne Rogers won $550 for placing second. Congratulations to all of
the ladies!
On Sunday on
the other side of Paradise Billiards, 10 ladies came to play in the 2nd
chance event, with local Donna Watt (in her
young 80s)
winning her first match and having a wonderful time. Eventually,
it would be Board Member Julie Stephenson besting
Most Improved
Player Mindy Williams in the finals. Julie won $90 for winning the
tournament and Mindy won $60 for placing second in this $100 added event.
Kendra Tomsik placed 3rd and won $30, with Lucille Donahue placing 4th
and winning $20.
A huge thank
you to our host Terry McFadden, Bob Winter for being our referee, and all
the wait staff at Paradise Billiards. And once again, thanks to Wes
Hunter for his continued support of the tour.
The next Hunter
Classics Tour Stop (and WPBA Qualifier) will be in Arlington, TX - July
13th/14th. Visit us at www.hunterclassics.com.
