Terry McFadden hosted the 5th stop of 2005 for the Hunter
Classics Amateur Women's Tour. Paradise Billiards, newly
renovated with a slick new bar area, was host to this year's event and 26
ladies came to compete and 13 were vying for the WPBA Qualifier!
The start of matches on Sunday morning at Paradise
Billiards!
Heather Pulford won the hotseat against Jillian Valles 7-1 and waited for her opponent in
the finals. Who would it be? Heather has competed in three of
the five finals of the Hunter Classics Tour in 2005 and has yet to win a Hunter
Classics coveted title. Unfortunately for her, Orietta Strickland also wanted the
title and fought her way through the one-loss side to meet Heather in the
finals. Orietta would need to defeat Heather two sets of 7 to win the
tournament and the WPBA Qualifier and she did just that with scores of 7-1 and
7-2.
Orietta is well known as the originator of the annual Genesis Women's Shelter
Fund-Raiser Tournament held in Dallas each year. What people may not know
is just how big her heart really is. Every time she wins a Hunter Classics
tournament, she immediately opens up her envelope to pull money out for the
owner and staff to thank them for hosting the event. We have seen this for
many, many years from Orietta and each time it impresses us.
You may have thought this yourself: "is she related to Earl
Strickland?" Every time she wins a tournament, the Hunter Classics Tour is
asked this about Orietta Strickland. Well, no she isn't, although she has
a strong game like Earl's. No other player has been as consistent on the
Hunter Classics Tour for a full TEN years! She has won a tournament at
least once a year SIX times in the last ten years. In 1995 she won 2
stops, in 1996 she came in 2nd 4 times and became the Tour Champion and in 1997,
1998, 2002, 2003 and now 2005 she has won one stop per year. Quite an
impressive run - and we haven't seen the last of her!
Heather Pulford is quiet like Orietta. Both have a strong game and are
quiet on and off the table. Heather is always a favorite, with supporters
all over the country and every stop she gets closer and closer to reaching the
high spot on the point standings, where currently Leslie Anne Rogers
resides.
Leslie placed 4th at Paradise Billiards at the hands of Orietta with a score of 7-4.
Leslie Anne was sent to the one-loss side by a hill-hill match early Saturday
against the newcomer from Colorado, Terry Duncan. Terry Duncan had 4
hill-hill matches on the winner's side, including a 6-7 loss to Heather on
Sunday morning. Jillian Valles keeps besting her highest finish and at
this stop she placed an impressive third place!
7th/8th places were filled by CueTimes owner Deb Winter and the always funny Bonnie
Plowman who both earned $100. 5th/6th places were filled by Ranee Breckel
and Terry Duncan who each won $140 and their highest finishes to date.
Leslie Anne won $210 for 4th place, Jillian won $330 for 3rd place, Heather won
$520 for 2nd place and Orietta earned $750 and the WPBA Qualifier for a 2006
event for 1st place.
Although
Roberta Maestas hasn't played pool in ten years, she showed the ladies in the
second chance tournament she is back. She double-dipped Julie Schultz in
the finals to earn $90. Julie won $60 for 2nd place and Amber Stone had
her highest finish to date in a second chance tournament placing 3rd and winning
$30.
Amber Stone, Julie Schultz and Roberta Maestas
